Opportunity International Australia
Opportunity International Australia exists to provide opportunities for people living in poverty to transform their lives.
Rather than a financial donation, Opportunity International Australia provides clients with a loan to help grow their own small business. This enables them to earn an income and afford food, water, shelter and an education for their children.
In 2009, Clear Solar contributed $20,000 to Opportunity International Australia to support the APPEND conference. The conference provided an opportunity for over 550 Filipino microfinance staff to learn new skills, share knowledge and support each other.
A Sustainable Future for a Cambodian Village
In December 2009, a group of Year 11 Melbourne Grammar students worked consistently throughout the year to raise funds to travel to Cambodia and work on several special projects.
One such project involved supporting a small village near Siem Reap, Cambodia.
The 16 families in this village live in extreme poverty. Melbourne Grammar's long-term strategy is to assist the people of this village to build a sustainable future. As the village has no electricity, Clear Solar contributed 20 solar powered lamps to enable children to study and the people to work after dark.
The solar lamps replaced the kerosene lamps previously used by the villagers, reducing the risk of fire and respiratory problems caused by inhaling the fumes. It also saves the villagers money, as they no longer require fuel for lighting.
